PERSONAL AND FAMILY HISTORY/BACKGROUND
Aleia comes from a poor but not impoverished family in Corinth. From early in her childhood, she experienced the presence of a spirit she calls "skolops" (pain in the ass). She was possessed by her dæmon at the age of 15, on the night of her wedding to an older, wealthy man of Corinth (it was, of course, an arranged marriage). In the heat of her struggle with the spirit, she killed her new husband before the marriage was consummated. She of course fled the scene, but her family and that of her husband have both become convinced, because of the trashed state of the house, that Aleia herself was captured or killed. In a sense, of course, this is true — not only was she "captured" by her dæmon, but Aleia as such has not lived since that night: she has gone through countless new identities, changing appearance and personalities as often as every week, at times. Regardless, she has some interest in not allowing her identity to be known, both because of that incident and because of the nature of her magic. * From Corinth, Aleia fled into the mountains of Greece and lived in solitude, wrestling with her d¾mon and learning her magic, for about a year. Since then, she has traveled around the towns and villages of Greece, Macedonia, and Asia, never staying in one place for long, using her astrological skill and magical abilities to support herself. * "Skolops" is beneficent in terms of his purposes in the world, but less than charitable in his methods for achieving them through Aleia. While she does not know much about him, she believes him to be some ancient Greek chthonic god or hero using her as a weapon against Rome. During her wanderings she kept an eye out for ancient shrines which could provide some clue to the dæmon's identity, but without any results. * Skolops makes certain demands on Aleia, including virginity (which she hates — but she's learned that the dæmon will prevent the violation of this demand by whatever means necessary) and a strictly vegetarian diet.

Macarus: I was really starting to like him for a while; he flirted heavily with me, which I was not at all used to, and I began regretting Skolops' enforcement of celibacy more than I had in a long time. But then I went off and killed Fyrne, and his opinion of me dropped into the gutter. Damn! Losing his respect hurt me a lot; not an easy blow to recover from.
