PERSONALITY AND MANNERISMS
Branwen is quiet and thoughtful, spending most of her days isolated from human contact, in silent communion with her animal companions. She speaks rarely, listens much, and thinks constantly and profoundly. Though her reasoning power may not be extraordinary, her insight into nature is profound, and somehow she has managed to find peace with herself and the world. Though to Romans and Celts alike she is kinless and without honor, she considers the river her home, the otters her kin, and the call of Dea Tywi her honor. She rejects all human standards of culture and civilization, often disdaining even clothing (though she is modest enough to dress when other people are around). She has nothing but scorn for notions of honor which would keep women in their place and perpetuate violence and war. She has a great concern for the value of life, whether human or animal, and more than anything else in the world regrets that she was forced (as she sees it) to abandon her children in her husband's hands. She can only pray that Livius' new wife will love the girls as her own, and protect them from the anger of their father.
PERSONAL AND FAMILY HISTORY/BACKGROUND
Branwen comes from a Silurian clan in the south of Wales. Her parents and older siblings were murdered when she was in her early teens, and her other relatives were thought to be responsible for the deed. Kinless, then, Branwen fled Wales, wandering through lowland Britain on foot, ending up traveling down the Thames. Moved by fear and wanderlust, she found passage across the English Channel and wandered upriver into Gaul. There she fell in love with a Roman merchant, Appius Livius Piso, and married him.
The marriage lasted eight years, during which time Branwen learned Latin and bore her husband three daughters. Livius beat her harshly, and was particularly upset at her apparent inability to bear the sons he desired to continue his merchant dynasty in northern Gaul. Branwen began having dreams in which a giant otter, identifying itself as Dea Tywi, goddess of the Tywi (Towy) River, spoke to her, calling her home — and finally, during one of Livius' more violent outbursts, she fled him, abandoning her daughters, and returned to Wales.
In the eight years since, Branwen has wandered along the currents and reeds of the Tywi River, spending most of her time aboard a simple raft, learning the ways of the river and finding a particular affinity with its many otters.
ADVENTURES ()
DIARY
Otters: They have the same general proportions as a weasel — the lithe, slender body, long neck, small ears, and short legs. The head is flattened, and the base of the tail is almost as thick as the body.
Otters swim easily with webbed feet, and can travel underwater for 1/4 mi. without surfacing for air. They prefer to travel by water but, their short legs notwithstanding, can travel on land faster than a man can run. Their food consists of all manner of small aquatic animals, including fish, which they catch sometimes by teamwork; they also prey on other small mammals. A litter of one to five young is born after a gestation of 61-63 days.
Unlike almost all other wild animals, otters are playful as adults. A favourite sport is sliding down a steep bank of mud or snow and plunging into water or a snowdrift. Otters are intelligent, friendly, and inquisitive. When obtained young, they can be trained readily.
Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) of Eurasian and North African rivers; also called common and Old World otter; length 22-33 in, exclusive of the 14-22-in. tail; shoulder height, about 12 in.; weight, 13-33 lb; fur, brown, paler below, white on cheeks and throat.
Tywi River: Approximately 65 mi. long. Rising on the slopes of Esgair Garthen in the district of northwest Brecknockshire (Breconshire) in the county of Powys, it flows southward to Llandovery in a deeply incised valley. Below Llandovery it trends southwest in a broad trough, following a line of weakness in the geological structure, before turning westward to Carmarthen. There the trend becomes sharply southward, possibly because of glacial diversion from an earlier course, and the river enters the Irish Sea in a broad estuary between Llanstephan and Ferryside, where beaches form a basis for tourist and resort activity. The Towy is a noted angling stream, especially for salmon and trout.
