Backgrounds and Starting Quests

I am providing these backgrounds as optional starting points for characters in the new Ægyptus campaign.

Kijje Agent

You are a dwarf and a member of Kijje, a dwarven warrior brotherhood sworn to fight the evils of the Underdark without regard to tribal differences among the dwarves. Almost like the Arthurian round table, Kijje is dedicated to equality among its members, committed to the highest ideals of the warrior (both combat ability and honorable behavior), and unified despite being drawn from many competing tribes. Recently, desert goblins—a race of orcs native to the depths under Ægyptus, but also found riding shaggy beasts across the desert—have been raiding villages and caravans around the region of Thebais. The council of your order has asked you to investigate.

Major Quest: Scout the Valley of Kings

Objective: Verify that desert goblins are present in the Valley of Kings and get an estimate of their numbers. Don’t engage them more than necessary, lest you provoke an attack upon a nearby human settlement. Identify their leadership, if possible.

You have a sending stone you can use to communicate with Kristryd, the dwarf paladin who acts as your mentor in the order. You should report back to her when you finish this initial quest, and she'll give you further instructions.

Hattí Merchant Guard

As a ranger and devotee of the god of trade, K'ta'a, you carry the responsibility to your people of ensuring that the hattí trade routes across the desert and to the adjoining human and dwarven communities remain clear and unhindered by bandits or marauders. Though you are not a cleric, you serve a priestly function of sorts, and your responsibility to your people is a sacred one. Recently, desert goblins—a race of orcs native to the depths under Ægyptus, but also found riding shaggy beasts across the desert—have been raiding villages and caravans around the region of Thebais. Your investigation of the region led you to the conclusion that they were using the human tombs in the Valley of Kings as a base of operations. There's only one thing to be done.

Major Quest: Stop the Caravan Raids

Objective: Cause enough damage to the desert goblins in the Valley of Kings to force them to stop raiding merchant caravans passing through the area.

Horned Circle Initiate

You are a member of the Horned Circle, a loose network of druids—primarily but not exclusively with Celtic roots—who share two goals: to preserve the health of the primal spirits of nature against the conquest of the Roman gods, and to liberate the oppressed people conquered by the Romans. Your contact in the Circle sent you up the Nile to investigate a brigand raid that had captured three British slaves, and you uncovered what appeared to be a much larger plot on the part of some desert goblins—a race of orcs native to the depths under Ægyptus, but also found riding shaggy beasts across the desert—to buy slaves from across Ægyptus and transport them down to the Valley of Kings to labor on some unspecified project.

Major Quest: Free the Slaves!

Objective: Venture into the Valley of Kings and find any slaves that the desert goblins have already transported to the area. Liberate those poor souls and figure out what the goblins are up to.

You know a simple ritual you can perform over a pool of natural water to communicate with Avaerin, your mentor in the Circle. As you learn more, you should report back to him and see if he has any further instructions or advice.

    Quest: Drive the desert goblins from the Valley of Kings in order to protect the nearby dwarven and human settlements.

Hermetic Wizard: You are an arcane spellcaster and an initiate of the Order of Hermes Trismegistos, a Greco-Egyptian mystery cult dedicated to Thoth/Hermes and the mystical pursuit of knowledge through magical practice.
    Quest: Retrieve the Incantations of Akhenaton from the defiled tomb.

Egyptian Priest: You are a priest of Serapis or Isis, devoted to the old Egyptian ways and intent on preserving the sanctity of ancient tombs and other burial sites.
    Quest: Drive the desert goblins out of the defiled tomb and reseal it to protect it from incursions, whether from above or below.
Theban Villager or Merchant: You're native to the area around the Valley of Kings, a commoner, professional, or perhaps even a slave.
